As many are preparing for Valentine’s Day with their significant others, there is an alternative way to celebrate the annual holiday. Women all over the world celebrate what is called, “Galentine’s Day,” a day meant to celebrate women and enjoy each other’s company.
The tradition started as fiction when the popular TV show, Park and Recreation introduced Galentine’s Day in a 2010 episode. The main character of the show, Leslie Knope, created the concept in an episode in order to celebrate the bliss of female friendships. The initial day to celebrate Galentine’s Day was meant for February 13, Valentine’s Day-eve, however women have taken the micro-holiday to celebrate at any point during the month of February. Leslie explained her invention in the episode to be, “Every February 13, my ladyfriends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies.”
As love’s biggest day is quickly approaching, New York City is ready to celebrate. Here are four ideas of what to do for Galentine’s Day with your girls:
- Brunch at Monarch Rooftop
Spend Galentine’s Day with your best friends eating brunch, drinking mimosas and making your own nail polish! There are plenty of great places in the city to have brunch with your girls, including Monarch Rooftop located at 71 West 35th Street. Enjoy a nice meal with your gals to celebrate your friendship!
- Spa Night!
Beauty and wellness blogger, Rachel Mansfield, will be hosting a spa night at Credo. Every guest will receive their own facial station and learn how to properly care for your skin by using luxurious products. Along with the facials, all guests will be treated with food and drinks. This event takes place on February 13, from 6-8 p.m. at 9 Prince Street.
- Movie Date with your BFF
The perfect girls night starts with a romance movie! With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, the must see movie is Fifty Shades Freed. Whether you are in a relationship or not, the Fifty Shades movies are the perfect Galentine’s date. Or, when in doubt, go with a classic: The Notebook. And of course, don’t forget the wine and popcorn!
- Indulge in dessert at Black Tap
Black Tap will be introducing their Valentine’s Day milkshake to their menu this weekend! No better way to enjoy a girls’ night than to treat yourself to dessert. The new milkshake is a red velvet cake batter shake with vanilla and chocolate frosted sprinkled rim, topped with a slice of red velvet cake from Magnolia Bakery. Don’t miss this festive dessert at Black Tap on 136 W. 55th St.
Whatever you choose to do for Galentine’s Day, just remember it is a time for women to get together and celebrate their friendships. So call up your best friends, open up a bottle of wine and have yourself a girls’ day!
